Mokume Gané

A 17th century laminated mixed-metal technique from Japan.

Detailed Description:
Mokume Gané translates literally as 'wood grain in metal'. I learnt this technique during my studies. It is is based on building up layers of metal, most of the time I used silver in combination with copper. By fusing these metals together and cutting into them with drills and chisels you can create surprising patterns. The metal plate is milled (flattened) between each sequence of drilling/chiselling. The uniqueness of this method is that each metal plate of Mokume Gane is different.
